First we use the graph paper to identify the x and y coordinates of all the points we will use to create the apple. Then we type the coordinates into an SVG path that uses curves.
Later in the semester, we draw the same apple using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. We trace another drawing as closely as possible. Then we'll split the apple into pieces (stripes) using the Pathfinder tool.
Finally, we can decide which is the better strategy for drawing the apple. In many cases, it takes students a long time to identify the geometric coodinates, but the resulting SVG version looks better. The Adobe Illustrator version frequently has anomalies such as corners that do not meet properly or white space between the stripes.
